One of the most famous and recognisable effects in a lot of modern electronic music, this is a great way to achieve a swelling dynamic or make sounds stand out more. With this effect, when one sound plays, another will drop away and come back at a timing set by the user. To achieve this effect you will use at least two sounds or instruments and a compressor that allows for a sidechain or key input.For example the sounds could be a 4/4 kick drum and a sustained synth line. In this screen grab of our example project, you will notice that the kick has been sent to a bus with no output, and that bus is labelled Side Chain Trigger, the reason for this is that only audio files, inputs or buses, can be selected as an side chain input to the compressor, not instrument tracks.Therefore the kick instrument must become one of these, a bus in this case. Also the signal for this doesn’t need to leave the computer as it is only being used to trigger the compressor so we have selected ‘No Output’ on the bus channel. This also ensures that the kick signal is not doubled-up and clashes with itself. At the moment the compressor is turned off and the bus is muted so we can hear what the parts sound like before side-chain compression is applied.
